West Asheville Overhaul – Scope Creep

The word of the week is –

Scope Creep: What is known in the business as pesky problems that present themselves once the project has started, that may or may not have been anticipated, and add to the bottom line of the original budget.

No interior design project is immune and this project that we are calling West Asheville Overhaul has been no exception.

Remember that mysterious, elevated bathroom floor on the upper level?????

Turns out there was nothing too major there, once it was opened up.  Thank goodness!

However, we did find out that the engineer was going to require some substantial support beams between levels, due to some sketchy work that was done by the previous builder.  Cha-ching!

Not only will they add to the bottom line, but they have required re-working the lower level, design in order to make them look intentional to the space.

Anyways, since the I-beams will become a major design element in the kitchen, we had to change the lay out a bit.  (Such is the norm in the interior design world).  We always have to be prepared to find solutions to problems.  One of the design solutions was to reduce the size of the island a few inches, in order to center it under the beams. Also, the placement of the cabinets and range shifted over to allow the beams to bisect the space symmetrically.

We are still contemplating what the final finish on the beams should be; left as is and painted, or wrapped in wood.  I’ll keep you posted.

In the meantime, work continues on the exterior, including digging the footings for the new additions.

More about that in the next post.

In the meantime, catch up by viewing the previous posts here.
